Congregational Initiative

I often get this question, "Pastor, what can we do for the church?"  I love that question.  There are a lot of ways to answer but to get to the heart of it I'll offer these three key passages and three actions you can take to build up your relationship with Christ, others, and the church!
Guiding Passages and Principles:
GOD DOESN'T CHANGE | Hebrews 13:8
WE NEED TO | Isaiah 43:19
GOD HAS A PLAN | Jeremiah 29:11

three ways to live them out!

#1 Prayer and fasting

GOD DOESN'T CHANGE: God is unchanging and we can lean upon Him always.  He promises when we approach Him in prayer He hears us.

Pray for the church

WHAT TO PRAY:  Using Psalms or any Scripture to pray for the church is a powerful tool that unleashes God's Unchanging Spirit among His people and holds the enemy at bay.

Here are some Psalms to get you started in your prayer life for the church:  Psalm 17, 35, 91, 101.

HOW TO PRAY: Here are some ways to add some punch to your  prayers.

Set a Time: Pick a day and time and commit to it

Prayer Walks:  Walk the perimeter or the halls

Pray During Worship Services: Choose a worship service and pray during service.  You can use this format as a guide for your prayers:

  • Pray God is magnified
  • Pray that we are all sensitive to God's presence
  • Pray for those directing worship and its elements
  • Pray God's people come ready to worship
  • Pray God's word is revealed through music and proclamation

Each Monday you are invited to join Pastor Rob and others in fasting for the church.  How you fast is between you and God.  The web is full of wonderful concepts for fasting and it can be anything from food to digital devices.  Be creative and find what God is leading you to sacrifice.

The aim: WE BUILD UP

#2 Take Every Thought Captive

WE NEED TO CHANGE:  John 10:10 says The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.
As you engage in conversation or action with anyone but especially with fellow believers ask yourself, "Will my words/actions bring a rich and satisfying life or will they steal, kill, and destroy?"  Reflect on James chapter 3 which encourages us to control our tongues and 1 Corinthians 10:13 which encourages us to resist all temptations.

Our language, our attitudes, and our actions are often controlled by our own tongue.  Be focused on Building Up!

INFLUENCES: 1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: "Bad company corrupts good morals."  Prayerful consider what influences personal, social, or otherwise you allow into your heart that maybe a corrupting influence.  If it is a negative influence you don't need it.*
*This is not advocating insular living or the Holy Huddle where we refuse to engage the broken world in ministry for fear of contamination.  This is about controlling what forces you allow to influence your inner life.  Are they voices that kill steal and destroy your peace in Christ?  If so its best to set healthy boundaries to minimize their influence.  Jesus ate with sinners and the like but he did not hold counsel with them he ministered to them.   He went out of his way to invite them into fellowship and we need to as well but Jesus held counsel with the disciples and of course above all the Father.
We are changing and so we must change for the better!  Influences will change us either for good or for ill.  Control yourself and your influences and lean upon God to guide and empower you in doing so.

The aim: WE BUILD UP (ourselves and others)

#3 Focus on the good

GOD HAS A PLAN: Look at where God is at work in the church, your community, or your family and join Him!  We can narrow on the negative and this distracts and depresses.  Focus on the good and join the fun!

Kids Hope, Project Manuelito, Grant County Rescue Mission, Back to School Bash, Bingo, Meal Ministry, Prayer Ministry, Branch Out, Student Ministries, Children's Ministries, Choir, Praise Team, Suite Living Ministry, Habitat for Humanity, Preschool, Missionary Support, the list goes on...

Find what passion God has given you: kids, youth, families, finances...

And find how God has gifted you.  Join your passion and your gifts to have an impact for the good.

WE BUILD UP by joining in God's plan!

  • God doesn't change - so lean upon Him in prayer and fasting.
  • We need to change - so grow in the Spirit not in self.
  • God is at work - so join Him in ministry.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NRSV)

11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.
